Architektur im Poble Nou, Photos: Rosa Grewe A grid pattern for growth: in the 19th century, industrialisa-tion attracted more and more people into the cities. However, the rapid growth was just too much for the structure of these centres, most of which dated from the medieval era. There-fore, the Catalan Ildefonso Cerdá designed a grid in 1859, which is considered as a shining example even today, to cope with expansion in the city of Barcelona. A means of organising future urban space was also a topic of concern in Paris, Vienna, London and Moscow at that time. Ein Raster für das Wachstum: Im 19. Jahrhundert zog die Industrialisierung immer mehr Menschen in die Städte. Aber ihren meist mittelalterlichen Kernen fehlte die Struktur für das rasante Wachstum. Deshalb entwarf der Katalane Ildefons Cerdá 1859 ein Raster für die Stadterweiterung Barcelonas, das bis heute als vorbildlich gilt. Numerous renowned architects, working on neighbouring projects in this area, prove just how varied contemporary façades can be. The design scope is simultaneously inspiring and overwhelming. The design of a façade is significant for each individual building and for its impact on the district. Both require order, a recognisable grid pattern and rules for freedom. Die Freiheit des Rasters: Das Poble Nou in Barcelona ist derzeit eines der größten Umnutzungsgebiete Europas. Hier beweisen namhafte Architekten die Vielfalt zeitgenössischer Fassaden in direkter Nachbarschaft. Die gestalterische Frei-heit ist inspirierend und reizüberflutend zugleich. Denn die Gestalt einer Fassade hat eine Bedeutung für das einzelne Objekt, aber auch eine Wirkung auf den Stadtteil. Beides ruft nach Ordnung und einem erkennbaren Raster, nach Regeln für die Freiheit. Grid in chaos: the New York group of artists, Hypersonic, addresses the issue of searching for patterns in disorder with their kinetic sculpture “Breaking Wave”. A mechanism drives 804 steel and zinc-coated wooden spheres and, depending on the observer’s position, different formations emerge. The sculpture hangs in the Biogen-Idec lobby in Cambridge, MA and illustrates the scientists’ search for patterns in bio-molecular processes. Das Raster im Chaos: Die New Yorker Künstlergruppe Hy-personic widmet sich mit ihrer kinetischen Skulptur „Breaking Wave“ der Suche nach Mustern im Ungeordneten. 804 mit Stahl und Zink überzogene Holzkugeln bewegen sich mittels mechanischer Steuerung und abhängig vom Standort des Betrachters in unterschiedliche Formationen.
