Mit Brunelleschi änderte sich dies nachhaltig. Brunelleschi verwendete beim Bau der Kuppel von Santa Maria in Florenz ein völlig neues Konzept. Die Kuppel weist im Stil noch auf die Gotik hin, allerdings eine neue Art der Konstruktion. Baulich gesehen hatte die Kuppel die Grenzen der Gotik überschritten und die Renaissance erreicht. Michael Hansmeyer von der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule Zürich hat die Trickfilmtechnik der 3D Animation genutzt, um faszinierend fremdartige Säulen zu erschaffen. Die computergenerierten Pfeiler ähneln ihren Vorbildern aus der Antike, sind aber zugleich teilweise so fein strukturiert wie Fraktale. „Die Arbeit liegt an der Schnittstelle zwischen Architektur, Mathematik und Kunst“, sagt Architekt Hansmeyer. Das Format Out of the Box, das die Tänzer des Ensembles dazu ermuntert, sich choreographisch zu erproben, ist zu einer echten Gauthier Dance-Tradition geworden. Der Titel Piano Particles ist dabei durchaus wörtlich zu verstehen: Gauthier verwandelt die Bühne augenzwinkernd in ein Labor für physikalischchoreographische Versuchsanordnungen. Die Bewegungen der tanzenden „Körper“ im Raum gewinnen eine ganz neue Bedeutung. Brunelleschi’s building of the Santa Maria dome in Florence illustrates how he applied a totally new engineering concept. The style of the dome was still Gothic, yet the manner of construction was new. In engineering terms, the dome left the Gothic era behind and entered into the Renaissance.
