Felix Bauer Year of Construction: 2014 Supporting Company: Aluform GmbH, Bad Rappenau Product: ALUCOBOND® naturAL Brushed Internet: ITKE Stuttgart | ICD Faculty of Architecture Stuttgart The pavilion - an avant-garde spatial sculpture with a communication area – features a base comprising not only ALUCOBOND® naturAL Brushed base plates and plinth bands but also laminated, semi-transparent fibreglass panels, reinforced by sewn-on carbon fibres. This structure is the result of an inter-faculty collaborative project and represents the concept of lightweight construction by using innovative computational design and digital fabrication methods. Communication zones featuring different characters are given definition by a curved semi-transparent wall. The upper part of the installation subdivides the The base of the exhibtion stand. Der Fuß des Messestandes. communication space into smaller segments and makes it visible from the distance, while a connected communication zone is created by integrating a bar in the lower part of the installation. The base for the whole installation is made of ALUCOBOND®. The carbon fibre layout is generated based on a structural topology optimization, machine constraints and lamination process requirements. The fibre layout was translated into machine paths for Tailored Fibre Placement (TFP). This method sews carbon fibre rovings onto a glass fibre fabric by guiding a CNC controlled frame along the sewing and fibre placement head. Forms & Elements 12/2014 20
